How can AI work towards an effective and just “green transition” in the mining industry?

The “green transition” is a talking point in countries around the world as the need for effective and efficient solutions to mitigate climate change is an increasingly urgent and present concern. What is less often discussed is the multifold increase in metals and minerals consumption that will be needed to transform existing energy systems and industrial processes (IEA, 2021; Mackenzie, 2020). Indeed, the “green transition” is by no means a neutral process. It will involve the expansion of mining operations to meet the growing demand for copper, cobalt, nickel, lithium, and other earth resources. A significant amount of these resources are located in communities in the global south and in countries with histories of exploitation related to large scale resource extraction (Adler et al., 2007; Bolger et al., 2021).
