NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework Playbook: A Deep Dive

Recent years have seen a sharp increase in the adoption and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI), with 42% of enterprises deploying the technology in their business. However, the widespread deployment of AI has also been accompanied by an alarming number of incidents and harms that have resulted from AI being used without the appropriate guardrails. While laws mandating AI risk management practices are largely still going through the legislative process or are not yet enforced, enterprises are increasingly turning to voluntary frameworks, such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), to reduce the legal, reputational, and financial risk of their AI.
The AI RMF is a voluntary, flexible framework to support organizations that design, develop, deploy or use AI systems to manage the risks of their AI. Underpinned by its core, which encompasses the four key functions of Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage, the AI RMF is accompanied by a Playbook, which serves as a practical companion to the AI RMF, offering actionable and adaptable guidance for organizations to implement it.
