UK Introduces New Bill to Regulate Automated Decision-Making in the Public Sector

On 9 September 2024, Lord Clement Jones introduced the Public Authority Algorithmic and Automated Decision-Making Systems Bill (HL Bill 27) in the House of Lords. This legislation aims to regulate the use of automated and algorithmic tools in decision-making processes within public authorities. So far, other than its AI regulation bill introduced in November 2023, the UK has taken a light-touch to AI regulation through a series of publications. However, if HL Bill 27 is passed, it could support the UK in aligning with the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on AI, which the UK signed when it opened on 5 September.
