New York follows in Colorado's footsteps to regulate Insurtech

Colorado SB-169 was introduced on 2 March 2021 and passed on 23 June 2021 before being adopted on 6 July 2021. Effective 1 January 2023, the law Restrict Insurers' Use of External Consumer Data concerns protecting consumers from unfair discrimination in insurance practices, prohibiting discrimination resulting from external customer information sources, algorithms, and predictive models. The bill sets out high-level principles for risk management and governance and requires the commissioner of insurance to develop specific rules for specific insurance practices and types of insurance.
