Yesterday, on 29 September 2024, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Models Act (“SB1047”). The landmark bill was previously passed by the Californian Assembly and Senate at the end of August 2024 but required the Governor’s signature for final effect.

Targeting the most powerful AI models, SB1047 set out a unique and comprehensive regulatory framework for the development and deployment of large-scale AI solutions in California. With its huge potential impact for the biggest actors in AI industry, the bill also received considerable opposition from Big Tech over the major concerns for stifling innovation and business growth.
