Protecting worker wellbeing in the face of AI: the Department of Labor’s principles and best practices

The use of AI in the workplace is increasingly being targeted by policymakers, particularly in the US, where there are several laws mandating bias audits of automated employment decision tools and multiple laws limiting workplace monitoring. While this remains true, there has recently been a shift towards addressing the implications of using AI in the workplace on worker wellbeing. Indeed, the US Department of Labor, on 16 October 2024, published a best practices roadmap for worker wellbeing that outlines several principles for worker wellbeing in workplaces harnessing AI. In this blog post, we outline the key principles underpinning the Artificial Intelligence and Worker Well-Being: Principles and Best Practices for Developers and Employers guidance and its evolution.
