EU AI Act Text Passed by Majority Vote ahead of Trilogues

The latest version of the EU AI Act (AIA) has been passed by the European Parliament with a large majority and will now proceed to the final Trilogue stage.

The EU AI Act (AIA) is a landmark piece of legislation proposed by the European Commission in 2021 to regulate the AI systems available in the EU Market. Taking a risk-based approach to regulation, systems are classed as posing minimal, limited, high or an unacceptable level of risk, with obligations proportionate to the system’s classification. An extensive consultation process saw several compromise texts proposed, with the Draft General Approach adopted on 6 December 2023. This text was then debated and revised ahead of a European Parliament vote on 26 April 2023, with a political agreement reached on 27 April.
